Church of St. Peter, Šempeter

The Church of St. Peter (the name Šempeter – Saint Peter – derives from it) is essentially a Roman church. In the Late Gothic period, it received the presbytery and tower. In the first half of the 18th century, it was transformed in the Baroque style and received a rosary chapel that contains a precious statue of Mary from the first half of the 14th century. When the monastic church in Novi Klošter Monastery was demolished in 1826, the parish Church of St. Peter received a high altar (from 1750) and the mentioned statue of Mary.
In 1767 and 1880, two chapels were built on the north and south of the church as well as a presbytery. The renovated church was consecrated by Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek in 1860. This is testified to by a marble board in the church.
