Guard Tower, Žalec

The guard tower is the only preserved part of the fortification of Žalec from the beginning of the 16th century. The tower has one floor and a typical cone-shaped roof. It was renovated in 2002. In 2004, an offspring (from Maribor’s Lent) of the oldest grape vine in the world was planted at the guard tower. The offspring was given the name Nikolaja. Since September 2006 you are welcome to the cellar of the 400-year-old guard tower, where you can taste and buy some of the best wine of the Savinja Winegrowers’ Association. In the upper, so-called exhibition area you can see medicinal herbs and an exhibition about wine-growing in the Lower Savinja Valley.
