Šmarje-Virštanj Wine Tourism Road

The Šmarje-Virštanj wine tourism road is divided in three parts with the northern and central part primarily running on the territory of the Municipality of Šmarje pri Jelšah. The Šmarje-Virštanj wine tourism road leads on the sunny side of four ridges that continue in the hills of the Croatian section. The areas are separated from each other by the Virštanj area that is slightly larger. The Municipality of Šmarje pri Jelšah has two particularly expressive wine-growing regions, i.e. Sladka Gora and Tinsko.
The northern part is 9.8 kilometres long and leads on the local road Pečica – Sladka Gora – Dolga Gora, where it ends on the border of the Municipality (which may, however, change in the future). The road is entirely asphalted. East of the regional road Podplat – Poljčane, the wine tourism road runs in the area of the Municipality of Rogaška Slatina (the local road Topolovec – Podturn – Zagaj po Bočem), where it ends.
Almost all of the central part runs on the territory of the Municipality of Šmarje pri Jelšah from the local road at Koretno, passing Konuško and Škofija, past Sedovec and past the valley of the Zibiški Stream to the Church of St. Bartholomew and from there to Tinska Gora past Roginska Gorca (the Municipality of Podčetrtek) to the Church of St. Urban, where it connects with the Mestinje – Podčetrtek road. The part from Tinska Gora to the Church of St. Urban is very difficult and a new road needs to be built over the existing track. There is no other option since the ridge is very steep on both sides and the road from Tinska Gora could only be led into the valley, but then it would not have the character of a wine road anymore. The central part is 16.5 kilometres long in total, of which 10.4 kilometres are asphalted.
