Castle Komenda

The castle lies on an incline in the centre of Polzela and was already mentioned in 1149.
Though the fate of the castle varied throughout the times, its dominant position, architectural traits and style elements make it an important cultural and historic monument.
A special relic of the castle is its antique lion made of Pohorje marble, which stands on the staircase railing just by the entrance gate. Above the stairs, a bronze plaque with the portrait of France Prešern, our greatest poet, is built into the wall.
The Order of Maltese Knights had four headquarters in Slovenia: in Vipava, in Komenda in Upper Carniola, in Melj near Maribor and in Polzela. The best preserved one is the castle in Polzela.
